Weekly Unlock Digest: Aug 31-Sep 6, 2026 | Ethena's fee switch

🔑 Key Takeaways
- $HYPE faces an $824M Founder/Team unlock (4.46% of circulating supply) on September 6; the team has not yet announced whether it will again claim only a fraction of the scheduled amount, as it has in prior release events.
- $ENA's $34M unlock on September 2 & 5 lands mid-vote on a tokenomics overhaul that ends monthly VC unlocks after October 5 and proposes routing a rising share of protocol revenue into ENA buybacks once USDe supply reaches $7.5B.
- BTC reclaimed $80,000 for the first time in over three months before hawkish Jackson Hole remarks pulled the market back into the high-$70,000s.
Weekly Recap
Crypto's rebound extended into a second week before running into a macro wall. Bitcoin cleared $80,000 on August 25 for the first time in over three months, as markets continued to digest the U.S. Treasury's decision to double its long-end bond-buyback operations. Fear & Greed Index peaked at 74 during the week, capping one of the fastest fear-to-greed transitions on record after sitting in Extreme Fear as recently as July 18.
The pullback came Friday. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's hawkish Jackson Hole remarks on August 28 were interpreted as reducing the odds of near-term easing, and BTC slipped alongside weakness in equities and gold — a broad risk-off move rather than anything crypto-specific.
Top Buybacks of the Week

Buyback activity last week was once again dominated by $HYPE, which repurchased $14.72M — nearly three times the rest of the leaderboard combined.
Two observations stand out. First, Hyperliquid's fee-funded buyback continues to run at scale directly into its unlock calendar — a relevant counterweight to the September 6 Founder/Team release covered below, though at $14.7M per week, buybacks offset only a small fraction of an $824M unlock in the near term. Second, the leaderboard's steep drop-off after the top two underscores how concentrated the "buyback meta" remains among protocols with substantial recurring fee revenue.
Upcoming Events
Next week’s scheduled cliff unlocks total about $885 Million in value. Dollar figures are marked at August 30, 2026. Top tokens facing the largest cliff unlocks next week include $HYPE, $ENA, $SUI, $EIGEN, and $OPN.

Unlock Spotlight: $HYPE
- Unlock date: September 6, 2026
- Unlock amount: $824M
- Unlock as % of unlocked supply: 2.13%
- Vested allocation: Founder/Team
The token enters this event with strong momentum: a fresh all-time high above $83, a regulatory narrative from the CFTC's reported work on a compliant U.S. pathway, and a buyback program that continues to direct the vast majority of protocol fees toward $HYPE purchases, providing a structural demand offset.

On paper, a 4.46% addition to circulating supply concentrated in Founder/Team hands is a meaningful overhang at elevated prices. In practice, however, scheduled amounts and realized supply have diverged sharply for $HYPE: Tokenomist tracking has shown that only a small fraction of contract-level unlocks has historically been claimed into circulation, with cumulative claim rates below 1% as of early 2026 and recent monthly claims coming in far under the scheduled figures. The team has not announced whether it will again claim only a portion of this tranche, so the headline $824M should be read as a ceiling on potential new supply rather than a committed release.
Unlock Spotlight: $ENA
- Unlock date: September 2 & 5, 2026
- Unlock amount: $34M
- Unlock as % of unlocked supply: 2.39%
- Vested allocation: Founder/Team, Private Investors, and Foundation
The unlock lands mid-vote on Ethena's tokenomics overhaul (open through September 2) and after $ENA roughly doubled from its August 19 low — elevated prices give unlocking holders more incentive to sell. The bigger picture is more constructive, with an important nuance: the Foundation and lead investors have agreed to eliminate future overhang associated with monthly VC investor unlocks by releasing unvested tokens.

Notable Tokenomics Updates
Ethena — fee switch vote and investor-unlock reset
On August 27, the Ethena Foundation announced four ecosystem changes targeting $ENA's two longest-standing criticisms: unlock overhang and unclear value accrual:
- Seed investor buyout: The Foundation bought the locked tokens of all but one of the major seed investors, those originally allocated more than 0.25% of supply, who had sold $ENA after the October 10, 2025 market peak; a single wallet declined. Investors who had not sold were offered a full-price purchase, and all thirty of those wallets refused.
- End of investor unlocks: Remaining investor unlocks conclude October 5, ending the monthly VC unlock calendar. Team tokens stay on their published schedule and the Foundation continues on its historical monthly track; the ecosystem allocation has no published release schedule at all.
- IP reassignment: Ethena Labs and the Foundation have agreed in principle to a Master Framework Agreement that would assign substantially all protocol IP and economic value to the $ENA-governed Foundation and ecosystem, rather than Ethena Labs equity holders. The document is expected to be published in October 2026.
- Fee switch vote (Aug 27–Sep 2): As USDe supply crosses milestones from $7.5B to $25B+, a rising 5% to 25% of protocol revenue goes to programmatic $ENA buybacks, $22.5M a year at the first milestone and $240M at $20B on Ethena’s illustrative table. Separately, 95% of net revenue from three new business lines is earmarked for buybacks too.
One caveat: USDe supply sits near $4.07B today, below the first activation threshold — so the fee switch is a future demand lever tied to USDe growth, not an immediate buyback program. Together with the $1B FalconX credit facility (August 19), this amounts to a comprehensive redesign of how value reaches $ENA holders.
We are excited to announce four updates regarding the Ethena ecosystem, further details on each point are provided in the blog linked below:
